LOCAL
FOODS
When you
choose to dine at Java River, you're supporting family farm-based agriculture
in western Minnesota. Many of the foods we serve come from the fields
and pastures of your friends and neighbors who are doing their best to
be good stewards of our land and water resources.
The ham,
sausage & pork, polish sausages & hot dogs we serve comes from
Pastures A Plenty Farms in eastern Chippewa County. The
eggs we use in our scones are from free-range chickens on the Lines
Creek Farm in Watson. Apples & Raspberries come from Swenson
Orchards near Montevideo. The flax and whole wheat flour we use
in our breads come from the A Frame Farm near Madison. Organic
vegetables (in season) come from the Easy Bean Farm near
Milan, the Coyote Grange Farm near Louisburg and Ron
Hanson's Farm near Dawson.
Our chickens are raised at the Morning Has Broken Farm near
Hanley Falls. Soup bones and beef come from Red Tail Valley Beef
in the Granite Falls Area. The Moonstone Farm supplies beef
products for bungalow burgers.
PRIDE
OF THE PRAIRIE
Pride of
the prairie is a collaborative effort of the Land Stewardship Project,
the University of Minnesota, the West Central Regional Sustainable Development
Board, Prairie Renaissance, the West Central Research and Outreach Center,
AURI, area citizens and farmers. Our purpose is to promote the production
and consumption of locally grown food and develop a regional food system
in western Minnesota that provides good nutritious food, nurtures a healthy
environment and provides economic opportunities for area citizens.
Food grown
in western Minnesota is the Pride of the Prairie! You'll find this food
every day at the Java River Café!

LOCAL
ARTISTS
The Upper
Minnesota River Valley is home to several noted artists, artisans and
writers. From Gene & Lucy Tokheim (stoneware), Dale &
Jo Pederson (willow furniture) and Malena Handeen (paintings)
to Brent Olson (author), Florence Dacey (poet) and Jerry
Ostensoe (Bard) there is a definite artistic culture growing in our
locale.
One of the
best ways to connect with these artists is to just come and "hang
out" at Java River -- there's an artist and/or eccentric personality
walking through the door every hour, six days a week. If you can't do
that, subscribe to our Cultural Events Mailing List by Emailing
javariver@info-link.net and
we'll keep you posted as to when they are about. Come to Java River for lunch while you're out here and experience the
Upper Midwest's Most Laid Back and Practical Arts Colony in action!
