Artist's Statement:
Most of these images were taken near our farm site in the prairie land
of the Minnesota River. Our farm site is located near the Marsh Lake Dam
between Appleton and Louisburg. Actually, most of these photos were taken
pretty close to the driveway, with one child in a back pack and the other
in a wagon, stealing brief moments to look for color and texture inspiration.
Gone are the days of a two hour leisurely excursion with just me and my
camera. It seems hard to get much further than the driveway these days.
And that is really OK. Children are so very special.
I received a development grant from the Southwest Minnesota Arts and
Humanities Council (SMAHC) to produce a new body of work. These images
are taken thinking about what comes towards you in a blurred spreading
of the light. There is usually something in focus, but I am most interested
in what is not in focus. Photos give you a chance to look at the beauty
of the blurred part of the image. In this series, I use it to simplify
the image.
My subject is usually of the native prairie plants that inhabit our landscape.
The prairie plants pull me to a time before and after my existence. There
is a mystery in life and in the prairie that I strive to connect with
as I look at things with my camera. These images are a result of that.
