Bio:
Donna Dean's watercolor art flows outside traditional lines bold splashes, unexpected color, and textured beginnings lead the way to a representational outcome. The excitement of spontaneously spattering watercolors on a clean white sheet of paper, and encouraging the colors to flow together to form a myriad of organic shapes is mesmerizing. I let the results suggest a subject and paint further to help that subject emerge. This method is a wonderful challenge and, when it works, is extremely gratifying, says Donna.
Donna tells us she began painting later in life than most artists. What began as a curiosity turned into a consuming passion. I often tell people 'I don't have thirty years to achieve the hard-earned skills of most artists, so I cut corners and enjoy painting intuitively'. Mostly self-taught, Donna continues to read books, attend workshops and spend countless hours experimenting. Very early, a book by Alex Powers influenced her pursuit of a loose, uncontrolled style. She has attended many workshops given by noted contemporary watercolorists such as Frank Webb, Betty Lynch and Jane Hoffstetter. She joined art organizations to learn from other artists, which also gave her the opportunity to exhibit her work. Earning several awards has encouraged her to continue.
After living many years in Mountain View, California, Donna just recently returned to her Midwestern roots. Accepting a graphic arts position at Impact Plastics, Donna selected Montevideo, Minnesota as her new home. I love the river, the parks and, of course, the friendly people. I enjoy meeting other artists and look forward to discovering and associating with local art groups. Java River is a great venue for doing just that.
