Artist's Statement:
As I consider it, there is no separation between art and life. I create
in order to express my humanity. It is through my artwork that I am able
to accept change, to express gratitude, to mourn and celebrate life. Since
the time of early childhood, painting has been my attempt to understand
my surroundings and incorporate my fantasies. My paintings stem from personal
experience and emotion, taken from the context of a vast array of experiences,
such as personal relationships, traveling, and nature observation. Although
my work is rooted in personal experience, I hope that when presented it
becomes more universal in nature.
Currently in my mixed media work, I am exploring the relationships of
random imagery. By correlating images, I hope to create a unified picture.
I spend much time considering each arrangement and I attempt to convey
an overall understanding or feeling even if the picture is left vague
or abstract. I believe that leaving something left to the viewer is important.
I practice a surrealistic approach; often I concentrate on the fluidity
of the paint, the contrast of the colors, the texture of layered applications,
or the quality of a line. It is my attempt to capture a freshness which
reflects on the essence of innovation. These works also reflect on the
nature of our lives. I believe that many of us are struggling to incorporate
all of the random elements of our lives into a successful machine. The
struggle can overwhelm us, and maybe we need to stop and appreciate the
inherent beauty in some of those random elements that make our lives so
complicated.
